Aerial Silks

About Aerial Silks

Aerial silks is one of the most popular aerial apparatus despite being one of the newest. It’s widely believed that silks were first developed into an aerial apparatus in the late 80s by the pioneers of modern circus, Cirque du Soleil and innovated upon by coach and artist, Fred Deb in the early 90s to become the apparatus we know and love today. Silks are called many things in the aerial world including aerial silk, fabric, and tissu. You might also seen them referred to as the ribbons or curtains by folks who are newer to the world of circus arts. Whatever you call them, they’re one of our and our students’ favorite ways to get in the air.

The silks (actually made of nylon) hang in two long strands from a single point in the ceiling. In our classes, students learn how to climb, wrap, pose, suspend, and drop as they build core, upper body, and grip strength developing their skills. This apparatus is great for folks who enjoy puzzles, problem solving, and heights! As an apparatus, aerial silks attracts students of all kinds from former gymnasts looking to use their acrobatic skills in a new discipline to dancers wanting to take their movement and performance skills to the sky to folks who are just looking for a fun, challenging new way to work out. Our fundamentals and beginner aerial silks classes are open to brand new students who want to get started on silks. No experience is necessary to get started and our experienced coaches are great at meeting students where they are and helping them find progressions that help them develop their skills and gain strength and mobility while having fun!

We offer regular drop-in and series class options for students of all levels in Austin, TX.
